Klowden Mann is proud to present a solo booth of work by Los Angeles-based artist Rebecca Farr, featuring a series of paintings from Farr's 2016 exhibition at Klowden Mann, Out of Nothing, as well as several new sculptural pieces that are a continuation of that body of work.
The large-scale figurative oil paintings on canvas are a study of Farr’s personal family mythology, as well as our Western cultural inheritance as it relates to embodiment.
Each five by four foot painting features two people moving through a dark body of water, with figures whose specific relationship to one another matters less than their unity in this space. The water unites the paintings on the wall into one space, as if multiple pairs are navigating the same body of water. The paintings reference a cultural memory of baptism and the ritualized act of surrender and rebirth, as well as the exposure of physical beings that want to own and love their own messiness.
The sculptures are abstract works made from plaster, cloth and burlap, and are presented just off the ground on planks of fired-wood. They are physical, abstract meditations on the body; sourcing the body in its vulnerability, strength, struggle, and eventual stillness; the cloth and plaster referencing the medical (and military) battlefield, as well as all of the elements of physicality that resist classification or quantification.
Rebecca Farr's paintings and sculptures from Out of Nothing are studies of Farr’s personal family mythology, and the duality of Western cultural inheritance as it relates to embodiment. Born in 1973 in Glendale, California, Farr was raised in the Pacific Northwest. Her latest solo exhibition at Klowden Mann took place in the Fall of 2016, and her recent residencies include The Ark: Center for Interdisciplinary Experimentation at Les Laboratories Aubervillers, Paris in the summer of 2017, and a 2015 residency at Kaus Australis in Rotterdam. Farr has exhibited in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, Houston, Istanbul, Rotterdam, and the Pacific Northwest. Her work is held in collections nationally and internationally, and she recently completed two years as a faculty artist in the education department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
