Klowden Mann is very pleased to present a selection of new work from Los Angeles-based artists Christine Frerichs and Morgan Mandalay.
This is a new piece by Christine Frerichs from her "Viewfinder" series. In naming the series, Frerichs references the physical act of framing a composition from life by using a classic viewfinder, a rectangular hole cut in a hand-held piece of paper. In that sense, the viewfinder becomes a metaphor for both the value of subjectivity as well as the problem of representation. In the case of many of her works, Frerichs uses both words and image; beginning each work by writing her immediate thoughts in a stream of consciousness onto the back of each blank surface.
Morgan Mandalay’s new paintings conjure aspects of genre painting, portraying everyday life or activities, and continue his interest in ideas of confinement. Flowers rest in re-used food jars on the kitchen table in a dark and ominous apartment as a storm passes through or flames creep around the corner, forming relationship to reuse and second chances. As the viewer, you are positioned at the kitchen table, creating a moment of reflection and contemplation in a common scene surround by an uncertain environment.
