Bernard Chadwick’s I Dream of You reviewed in Art Scene 1.4.17

The spiritually beautiful video and sound creation of Bernard Chadwick, “I Dream of You,” nicely conveys a sense of wonder. Using fourteen different audio channels and multiple projectors, the piece is triggered by sounds and sensors to create a constantly evolving series of visual and aural sensations. Abstract and haunting, images shift from screen to screen and onto walls. The artist has described the work as an “abstract music video,” which is apt. The experience plunges the viewer/listener into a space filled with ... (read more)

Bernard Chadwick "I Dream of You" @ Klowdenmann Gallery In Los Angeles
December 21, 2016

Bernard Chadwick describes the piece as an “abstract music video; a song that is reaching out for a body.” Projectors mounted throughout the center of the space throw images onto six suspended screens, an uneven spiral of visual information that spills from screen to screen and throws back onto the walls. Though Chadwick gives us every element of a song, taken apart and pieced back together there is never a ... (read more)

Bernard Chadwick’s Synesthesia reviewed in Artvoices Magazine 12.20.12

Synesthesia by Bernard Chadwick shakes my subjectivity all up. It reminds me of the poem “Voyelles” by Arthur Rimbaud, who might have been a synesthete; certainly he was a laudanum-drunk, a gunslinger, and all round deranger of the senses. Rimbaud saw vowels in colors — a feat of estranging one’s subjectivity, remarkable if self-taught. They say some children have trouble discerning their senses: touch-hearing, smell-seeing, or taste-believing. Jacques Rancière , that political deranger, would call this a “redistribution of the sensible,” against which he ... (read more)

Peter Frank reviews Bernard Chadwick’s recent show in Artillery Magazine 9.27.12

THE TERM “SYNESTHESIA” NORMALLY GETS APPLIED TOO BROADLY. Whether or not we need to stick with Oliver Sacks’ insistence that it refers simply to a neurological disorder, we do need to acknowledge that “synesthesia” is not an arbitrary alignment of artistic disciplines so much as the automatic sensory response to the stimulus of a different, discrete sense—hearing smells, tasting colors, that kind of thing. Many artworks and theories have been created out of the creators’ involuntary ability to respond thus. Many more artworks ... (read more)
