As part of her contribution to the OCMA Pacific Triennial 2017- Building as Ever, Nancy Popp is organizing a series of public programs and actions that seek to connect the community-based movements resisting displacement in Rio de Janiero, Los Angeles, Santa Ana, Costa Mesa and other Orange County cities.
These events will take place both at OCMA and in local Orange County communities with organizers and groups that are working on the ground with local residents. As events are planned and finalized, details will be available on the OCMA website’s Calendar: www.ocma.net/events
The first scheduled event for The Community Museu’s public programs is the film screening Cinema na Vila Autódromo (Cinema of Vila Autódromo, on July 28th, 2017 at 8:00pm.
This series of works, produced by and about the supporters and residents of Vila Autódromo, details their struggle against their village’s displacement by the developers of Rio de Janiero’s Olympic Village in Barra de Tijuca.

Waiting for the Medal- 48 min
This UFSC student documentary follows the daily struggle of Vila Autódromo residents who had their homes taken by force by the government, particularly those who resist the displacement and choose to remain, showing the main moments of community struggle and the fate of families after the Olympics leaves Rio.
VA. 4598- 15 min
Artist Igor Vidor performs Olympic weightlifting moves amid dwellings, abandoned houses and ruins in the Vila Autódromo community. Since 2013, the site has undergone a process of removals and demolitions resulting from the construction of the Olympic Park in Rio de Janeiro’s Barra de Tijuca.
Vila Autódromo Persiste – The Importance of Culture– 26 min
The short film narrates the resistance of Vila Autódromo residents from the point of view of the collectives Lá Vai Maria and Tupiniquins, who held cultural events in the community with the purpose of giving visibility to the struggle against the village’s displacement.
Brother of the Morro- 10 min
Produced by the Nucleus Piratininga de Comunicação/NPC, this short film narrates the relationship between São José Operário, the Saint Joseph the Worker Church in Vila Autódromo, the community in Praça Seca and Dutch Father Frank. The political organization of the community, their struggles for housing, infrastructure and their achievements are the fruits of this friendship.
