Temporary Public Art Exhibition

Metro Arts is excited to announce Nicole J. Caruth as the curator for our inaugural temporary public art exhibition. Nicole J. Caruth is an art writer and curator with abiding interests in public engagement and community wellness. This is evidenced by her portfolio of projects addressing food justice, education, housing security, and other issues that touch on the necessities of life. Recently, her research has focused on neighborliness, exploring how artists can influence people to act on behalf of each other to improve living conditions for everyone.

Through this exhibition, Caruth will initiate conversations inspired by the idea that food and art have long been a means of bringing communities together. Using food as a medium to explore changes in the urban landscape, such as rising rents, widening income gaps, gentrification, and housing displacement, Caruth will challenge Nashvillians to consider the connection of food to the urban environment and emphasize how healthy food systems are essential for communities to survive and thrive.

Caruth has curated an amazing group of nationally-recognized, socially-engaged artists working at the intersection of sustenance and social change to take part in this exhibition. The exhibition will include Nashville-based artists as well as national artists who are imagining alternative systems of food production and creating models that are local, sustainable and community-oriented.
